This is the original CD release, with background notes, German libretto, and English and French translations. Solti has always conducted a well-balanced and enjoyable performance of "Die Meistersinger" with great vigor. The warmth and full-blooded playing of the Vienna Philharmonic and Norman Bailey's very human portrayal of Hans Sachs, recorded at the height of his powers in the role, are its main assets. His interpretation is both stylishly sung in long-breathed, unemphatic phrases and philosophically interpreted. Upon listening again, one is deeply moved by its eloquence. Bernd Weikl's portrayal of Beckmesser is rewarding and unexaggerated, making him quite believable as an alternative suitor. Kollo's Walther is performed with great intelligence and art, offering an excellent lyrical performance. Bode's sensitive Eva, Dallapozza's pleasing David, and Moll's affecting Pogner, especially in his First Act address, complete the strong cast. For those unaware, the Nightwatchman's name hides a mixed identity; it is the anagram of Kurt Moll and Bernd Weikl, who share the part; one of Decca's little jokes. Julia Hamari is fine as Magdalene, and Gerd Niedstedt is a fine Kothner. The various mastersingers are well sung. This big-scale performance gives a worthwhile account of this endlessly rewarding and heart-warming score.
Solti's reading of the Meistersinger is strong and solid – perhaps a bit too solid. The same Walter (Kollo) and a richer-sounding but somewhat wobbly Bailey as Sachs are featured, but the overall casting is generally not quite as good as in the near-contemporary Karajan recording. The chorus work in this recording is a bit shaky in places, particularly considering the unparalleled importance of the chorus to this opera. The Vienna Philharmonic delivers a musically exact performance, but without the joie de vivre that one usually associates with this orchestra. Somehow, the greater solidity of Solti's approach to Wagner, which brings necessary gravitas to the Ring, seems to turn into stolidity when applied to the more human-scaled Meistersinger. –Christian C.
